Since Hickling's studies in 1933, several authors have used otoliths for age determination of hake. The different results show important divergences in reading, which indicate the complexity of otolith structures and the difficulties of interpretation. The otoliths of european hake display many subannular bands which cannot be identified as winter zones. The first winter ring is often hard to locale and the outer edge is difficult to read. The aim of this paper is to review the recent works and to emphasize the difficulties in reading otoliths of hake. . Depui Hickling (1933), un grand nombre d'auteurs ont ulilisé les otolithes pour déterminer l'âge du Merlu. Les résullats obtenus montrent des divergences importantes entre le lectures, ce qui témoigne de la complexité de la structure observée et des difficultés d'interprétalion. La complexité de la lecture des otolithes de merlu est liée à la présence d'un grand nombre d'anneaux ne correspondant pas à des structures annuelles. A ceci s'ajoute la difficulté d'identifier le premier anneau hivernal et l'analyse de la bordure extérieure.
