Since Hickling's studies in 1933, several authors have used otoliths for age determination of hake. The different results show important divergences in reading, which indicate the complexity of otolith structures and the difficulties of interpretation. The otoliths of european hake display many subannular bands which cannot be identified as winter zones. The first winter ring is often hard to locale and the outer edge is difficult to read. The aim of this paper is to review the recent works and to emphasize the difficulties in reading otoliths of hake. .
